I did this recently over the net and was pleasantly surprised at how easy and quick it was. You see those TV ads and it is true. Gold is much sought after in these recessionary times and after researching it a bit I found that the price you get on the net is superior to high street offers. Type cash for gold into your search engine. The bigger, more reputable companies will flash up in the first few pages. Some companies will advertise the price per gram (this fluctuates) so weigh your gold before shipping it off so you know how much to expect. The money (£280) was in my bank account in 48 hours. Check out web review pages too. Type in "selling gold internet reviews" to the search engine and you should get Joe Public's opinion of various companies.
Does anybody (UK based) have experience of those 'we'll buy your old gold' companies? I have lots of gold I don't wear, but are they trustworthy?

i'd take it to an independent jewellers to get it valued first they will give you a more realistic price- those companies will offer you way below the market value as they think you are desperate to sell and want any money fast- if you reject their first offer they will up it but it will still be below the market value.

You need to be really careful with this, a lot of companies will completely rip you off. Once you receive your quote, call back to get your gold sent back to you and they'll normally up the quote!

Personally I would not touch them with a barge pole. Why would you send your gold off in an envelope and then sit and hope something comes back. There is so much room for a large scam and you can never find these companies again when you report them to the police. I would take it to a jewellers or an auction house who does free valuation. You can find the updated price of gold on the net. Weigh it at home on the scales and you may be able to work it out for yourself.

A company called Hatton Garden Metals recently came out top in an independent review by MoneySavingExpert.com. Here's the link to the article - it contains lots of other useful information for anyone interested in going down this route: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/gold-selling-sites.
