do as much of the tan as you can on your lower back, the back of your shoulders etc, then use the front of you hand (not your palm) to rub in the middle/top area of your back, it works for me - don't think the clicking noise in my shoulder is natural though eeek!

Try the fake tan that you can get in a spray. Spray liberally and the residue will run down to an area of your back that you will be able to reach and wipe away to prevent streaking.

St Tropez do a long handled applicator, with a sponge type end & you can just buy the sponge refills. It doesn't give the best result, but is definitely a good make-do! Good luck!

also, you can buy long-handled things with sponge on the end which are meant for putting sun-cream on your back. they are easy to use and would, i imagine, be perfect for applying fake tan evenly. must admit i've never tried! they appear in mail order travel accessory catalogues, etc.
