I refuse to have a 'work' wardrobe - even when buying smart clothes, make sure that you actually like the item. Only buy things that you want to wear anyway, even if you wear particularly smart combinations of these clothes to work.
How to create a complete wardrobe including toiletries for work but that can also be used for out of work

Make a list of what you will need - trousers, skirts, shirts, cardigans etc. then look for these items in shops that you like. then when you get home, try them on in combination with your more casual clothes, if you would wear the item as part of an outfit outside work then keep it, if not take it back and keep looking. Think of them as "clothes Im allowed to wear to work" rather than "work clothes" to keep you on the right track. Allow yourself to buy essentials such as boring black trousers for work only but only from cheap shops. As for toiletries, buy miniature versions of things and keep them in your handbag ready for work and home, Superdrug has loads of mini things.
