Check the internet for all of the Salvation Army & Good Wills in your area. Mapquest them and spend a whole day "thrifting"! Also depending where you live it may be a good idea to check out vintage stores, antique shops and flea markets. I wear and swear by vintage. Oh yeah... Ebay is a great solution. If you are looking for a specific "mod button down dress, etc" Also Goodwill has an online auction that is set-up just like Ebay, check it out! www.shopgoodwill.com

    1) Go first thing in the morning. This will ensure you see the best new stuff before the masses. 2) Hit the handbags, accessories, and jewelry first. Again, this will ensure that if there is a vintage Coach bag or awesome estate jewelry to be found, you will find it first! 3) See the potential in items. Don't let a missing button or fallen hem stop you from an otherwise great find. 4) Since I'm a big fan of using thrift and consignment stores to score designer and fashion items, I do my research first. As this entails reading Vogue, it's an enjoyable chore. 5) Don't forget to look at the art! I have found some of the best prints at thrift stores. (Best score: two Ansel Adams prints that sold in a catalog for $55 each. I paid $1.50 for both!)

Never dismiss something because it looks a bit old or has a slight hole or think you are "above" the store because you'll never find anything, a friend of mine does this then complains that she never finds anything good but that I some how can. If there's a small hole you can fix it, if its a bit dirty you can always wash it...Another thing is to check all racks because the store is cheaper people tend to shove things on any rack and it might just be a gem

Don't forget thrift stores in college towns. They usually have brand name clothing that was overstocked and donated from major stores. (at least in the states) They may cost more than a typical thrift store, but it's still a great alternative to the mall. Especially if you're an unusual size and need options!
