Respect them, and they will probably respect you back. Be very sensitive in what you say - offending people isn't a good idea. Notice what conversations they tend to try and steer away from and don't talk about them. Find a hobby that they enjoy and talk about it. Help them but don't be patronising or sneer. They will be extremely grateful to be given the time of day, even if they don't show it, and that way you will gradually gain their respect.

Older people are like any other people, they are not in a special category due to their age! Treat them as you would like to be treated, with good manners and by showing respect yourself.

If you behave responsibly, are clean and have good manners, you will be respected by everybody. If you are irresponsible, sluttish, rude and violent, you have no right to anyone's respect. Age has nothing to do with it.
