(For girls and women) Wipe front to back, even if it feels awkward. The reason for this is that wiping moves anal bacteria across your skin. When the movement is back to front (to be avoided!) these bacteria may reach your urethral opening and cause a urinary tract infection (UTI). When the movement is front to back (to be favored!) these bacteria are pushed away from the urethral opening. Train girls early about wiping: it will help prevent them from having UTIs and it will sensitize them to UTI issues that might be discussed when they are sexually mature (esp. peeing after sex).
