Ask him. If he's that good a friend he'll be honest with you. Oftentimes people act completely different when they are around one group or another and perhaps he doesn't realise that he is doing this. I'd suggest bringing this up as an interesting puzzle that you want to get to the bottom of and he'll be less defensive about it.
What to do when your best (guy) friend is sends mixed signals. When we are alone he flirts but when we are in a group he almost totally ignores me. I really like him, what should I do?

I agree with above, sometimes guy are more relaxed when alone, for example with there closest friends, but when they are in a big group, they get all macho. I know one of my male friends, when alone, he always confides in me about relationships, he cracks jokes and gets all playful and flirty, but then when hes infront of his male friends, he talks totally different, cracks rude jokes, and tries to embarass me etc, best way to get tot he bottom is to ask him out straight, hes not a mind reader, nor are you, at least that way you both can clear up any confusion.
